Many of our posts focus on the importance of having a social media presence and keeping up with the various sites. But it’s just as important to monitor and analyze how effective your marketing efforts are. For example, do you know how much traffic your site generates from Facebook or Twitter? If not, how do you know your social media marketing efforts are working?
As we all know, Web analytics are truly the only way to know where your site traffic is coming from. But getting accurate accounts of how much traffic is directed to a site has been a challenge. The good news is that sites are getting better about tracking these figures.
There is analytic software that can help, however social media sites that offer feedback will provide you with more data to make informed decisions. While most social media sites have not partnered with sites that provide such information in the past, it looks like that may change in the future. In fact, Twitter recently released its own Twitter Web Analytics tool. This tool allows marketers and web owners to see how much traffic Twitter generates for a site, how much of a site’s web content is shared on Twitter and how effective the Tweet button integration is on a site.
Facebook also offers analytics, however it’s focused more on user demographics and shared content. You can download data regarding daily visits as well as the number of new likes and comments. Keep in mind this information is focused solely on the Facebook page itself and has nothing to do with a company’s homepage. While this information may be helpful, it doesn’t translate the Facebook visits to homepage visits like Twitter’s analytics tool claims to do. Some contend that Facebook hasn’t been able to offer more insight to marketers and web owners due to privacy concerns, which is arguably understandable given the demographic information Facebook gives out.
Now that the Twitter analytics tool is rolled out, perhaps other sites will take note and follow suit. It sure helps to have information that allows you to make informed decisions about where to focus your energy to ensure you get the maximum amount of traffic to your site.
